Dan first saw the Eldred Rock Lighthouse in the fall of 1979 when he took the ferry to Haines to work as a printer and reporter. Soon after arriving, he helped set up the original fresnel lantern for safekeeping in the Sheldon museum. He has been building timber frame homes in Haines since then, taking periodic breaks to teach technical writing at the university level and industrial arts in Brevig Mission, Alaska. He also built and managed icefield camps for dogsledding on the glaciers in Juneau and Skagway. He has done some restoration work on the lighthouse and other buildings of similar age and construction, which he says is like having a conversation with his grandfather, who built in the same ways from the turn of the century.
